WOKING, SURREY After the fast. Mufti Liaquat Ali Amod, 52, and his wife Zainub, 45, prepare a meal to break the Ramadan fast. They fast for the whole month, every day from daybreak until sunset. Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar and the holiest of the four holy months. The spiritual aspects of the fast include refraining from gossiping, lying, and slandering. Purity of thought and action is paramount.

OXBOROUGH, NORFOLK Hearts and flowers. 'On 14 February 1477, my ancestor John Paston received a letter from Bridget Coke in which she called him "My Valentine",' says Henry Bedingfeld. 'That is apparently the first use of this term in English, and it gave birth to a great British tradition. They married and I am therefore directly descended from these two, the first two sweethearts to call each other Valentines.'

HAYWARDS HEATH, WEST SUSSEX A Twist on Noah. Sculptor Johnny Woodford stands in the doorway of his wooden 'Ark', itself a work of sculpture. It is one of a range of alternative living structures he has hand-built from locally sourced timber. 'This is my home,' he says. 'It's my base where I do all my woodworking and sculpture, my retreat, my wild place for sharing with friends and for being alone. I'm never tired of it.'

LIVERPOOL, MERCYSIDE Oasis. Madryn Street is where Ringo Starr grew up. Now, residents are being forced to move out as the council demolishes the houses. 'I wanted to stay because it has been my home for 32 years and is a lovely little house;' says Sandra Graham, 62. 'It was a smashing neighbourhood and very friendly. Now I am waiting to move to a new house around the corner. The nice thing is I will be joining five of my old neighbours.'

SOUTHWARK, LONDON Block Party. Unemployment among the residents of flats on the Brandon estate is high, but so are spirits: a recent Children and Youth Festival drew 500 people without a single disturbance. Its costs were paid for by TV shows filmed in the area — including The Bill, Doctor Who, and Spooks — which frequently use the estate for portray urban realism. The block, built in 1957, has 68 flats and the residents are primarily low-income, young, multi-ethnic, single-parent families.
